I think it apears when using greyscale/grayscale (for americans
) and what it does is changes the threshold between white and black pixels or the detail of the image, e.g if I have a gradient from black to white, the higher the threshold, the more black pixels will be shown, if its lower, the more white. It would also come up when you have other colours e.g red to yellow etc. if this right then let me know and I'll give you a very tricky question!
