| You're missing a small step step here, try this instead:
Make a new layer, and fill it with the gradient that the tutorial recommends. It will cover the entire image, don't worry. Once you have your gradient, right click on the layer (ctrl+click on a mac) and select "Create Clipping Mask".
If that doesn't work, make sure that your ball is on it's own layer and try again. If the ball has any background on its layer, then the clipping mask won't work correctly.
