Unhappy Resizing a photo to US passport size specifications ( 2" X 2" and 1 inch face)

    Resizing a photo to US passport size specifications ( 2" X 2" and 1 inch face)-passport_orig.jpg
    Hi gurus,
I am having a hard time creating a passport size photo for my 2 month old (photo attached above). I clicked the photo and edited it in photoshop to change the background but now I am unable to size it such that the face is 1 inch (in height) and overall size be 2"X2". Please help or direct me to appropriate link.

Use the crop tool on the tool bar and set height and width to 2in and 2in.
    That should do it

You set the H&W to 2IN otherwise it may default to 2 pixels.
Then with the Mouse and holding down the left button drag a selection across the image.
Refine it and click the check mark when your satisfied with your selection.

The cropping worked, but now the problem is as per the specs the face size should be within 1 IN or 1 3/4 Max, I think mine is getting bigger than 1 3/4. How do I reduce the lenght of the face to be within 1 3/4 in. I have attached the edited pic. Also how does the ruler work it doesn't show the lenght in inches.

No matter what you select, no matter how big or small the box you make, when you click on the check mark the image will be 2X2.
If you select the baby's eye, the resulting image will be 2" X 2"

Select as tight a crop as you need to be within the min/max requirements.
    The image will be 2X2

Re: Resizing a photo to US passport size specifications ( 2" X 2" and 1 inch face)

    Hello, and welcome to PsG!
When cropping for US size passports, I use the center mark of the crop tool to measure the head. I place the top of the crop tool on top of the hair, then scale the crop so that the center is lower than the mouth, but higher than the chin. This is for the overall size of the crop.
Also, you should have the eyes between 1 1/8" and 1 3/8" from the bottom of the pic. I then move the crop marquee vertically to eyeball (no pun intended) the vertical position, again, using the center mark of the crop tool as a reference.
In CS5, you can get a grid in the crop tool. It might help.

I also notice that the photo has been edited to remove the background. I don't think this would work.
Take another photo in front of a white or light grey background, and restrict the Photoshop editing to the crop.

Here is the link to the PDF with the specifications: http://travel.state.gov/pdf/Photo%20...2010-01-04.pdf

    Hope this helps!
