How do I do the next step in this tutorial?

Create a Christmas design using Photoshop

If you go down to the section where it asks me to draw a path and then edit the layer style.

I have drawn my path but how do I get the path onto the layer so that I can do the part in the process where I actually create a physical path going up the hill? I've applied the shadows, glows, overlays but nothing happens to the path I've created.

Again - knowing me I've missed something really obvious but the tutorial doesn't say.

When you use the pen tool, choose to draw a shape in the upper left corner, not path.
