I would like to paint this way from grayscale artwork.

    Hello,
I'm fan of this kind of artwork (Kinu Nishimura)
I try to understand how do paint in the same way.
I think she starts by do some texture to her cleaned artwork using only gray.
Then I think she apply some filter / adjustment to every area (in another layer) to give the colors to the objects.

I've try to do the color change to her arm after changing it to grayscale.
Then I used a layer in multiply mode then paint with skin color on it.
    Final part was hue/saturation editing.

    I don't like my version.
It seems very flat. Seems to be the same color with daker variations.
The original was so colorful and shiny with dynamic colors.

Any idea how to have this kind of effect?
I'm pretty sure there is gray texture then color changes, but how??

    thanks in advance.

we have some threads that I cant seem to find at the moment based on colouring in black and white photos however it is not quite the same as you want. Artistic side to photoshop is not my strong point. However there are plenty of manga painting tutorials out there. There is even a whole plugin for photoshop called manga studio I believe that makes it easier for manga style art.

Re: I would like to paint this way from grayscale artwork.

    Thanks to both of you.
Paul your link is good, particulary the Digital comics tutorial.
    Thanks again.

Most of the coloring tutorial uses some childish coloring way (I hope I'm not offensive)
Kinu Nishimura's way of coloring (see my picture in first post) is simple an also more mature with use of textured brushes.

The thing I would like to understand is :
-Is there a way to colorize a grayscale photography or grayscale artwork without having "boring colors" (see my test of the woman's arm in the picture).
-I'm pretty sure this is some kind of color setting / hue saturation / layer mode.

I'll try to look at photogray coloring tutorial.

Try looking at a website called i draw girls .com sounds terrible but the digital art you are looking for is much more this style. They also work in monochromatic tones and then color later. good luck

You might find that using vivid light layer blend option with hue/sat changes will get you closer to the color and intensity that you want. I don't do this kind of coloration but it's a thought.
