Removing person from image in Photoshop

I have a great laughing image of a kid with the mother hiding behind him. Am a newcomer to Photoshop. I have tried a few methods in Photoshop to remove her but still looks a bit messy.
What is the cleanest (and easiest) method for removing the mother from the background?

And don't be afraid to use the lasso to isolate only the areas you want to change and protect sections you want to remain in-tact.
