Well I've got two answers but only one does a 'guaranteed perfect' job, the other is more 'by hand'. However, I can't help but thinking I'm missing some elegant (and simpler) technique (my best way requires a couple of alpha channels). So I'll wait and see if someone else has an idea...?

hmmm, I havent done it with alpha channels, perhaps there is a third answer? the answer i'm looking for is quite simple and involves layers

Try to play with the blend if sliders (alt+click to do a gradual blend) in the blending options of the layers...

ahh I know what you meen, yes to an extent it works, but you still get a faint line where the two shadows meet
