Is this photoshop or camera? (another howdee do dat?)

I've pretty much only used photoshop as a drawing tool and have done VERY little actual photo editing. I have recently taken an interest in photography which is forcing me to start using photoshop for actual photos (what a concept!).

I came across this photo browsing flickr and was wondering if this was done post production or if he was using some crazy filter on his camera:

    Flickr Photo Download: time

and another photo with the same effect:

    Flickr Photo Download: veranda

If it was a filter I would love to know what one and if it was photoshop I would love to know how he did it.

    Thanks!

The effect in the second photo is way over the top, I advice you not to walk that path. The first one looks much better.

This is a process called HDR: High dynamic range imaging - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    HDR is widely abused.
