Editing colors of a .gif/animation?

I know how to create .gif/animation files, but how would I edit the colors? For instance, if I wanted to turn a .gif/animation from color to black and white? I attempted to follow the steps located on a tutorial that someone linked me to (they were incredibly vague) but no matter how many things I changed the image had no visible differences. I have PhotoShop v. 7.0 and as I've used Paint Shop Pro for years now, I'm not very familiar with adjustment layers, so any help would be appreciated!

A quick way....

Whatever you do, DO NOT CLIK on any of the layers of the open file so when you jump back foth from IR to PS and vice versa, the ani frames or sequence do not change.....

... open animation gif in IR
... Jump to PS7 , this displays the frames as layers
... Jump back to IR and close the file. Return to PS
... Convert file to grayscale... IMAGE>MODE>GRAYSCALE... select don't merge
... Convert back to RGB.... select Don't Merge...
... Jump back to IR... this opens file in IR with frames in proper sequence.... just check to make sure...
... SAVE OPTIMIZED AS..... use differnt name so you don't overwite the original.

I hope I got the sequence right... didn't open PS7 on the other computer...

You could also convert to B&W non-destructively by simply adding a new layer filled with black above all other layers and changing the color mode to either Hue or Color.

"but instead of going to grayscale I go to brightness/contrast?" --- That depends on what exactly you want to do to the colours. Hue & Saturation would be a better choice for changing the colours. Open the Hue & Saturation dialog window ( PC: Ctrl+U / Mac: Cmd + U ) and change the colour selection menu to the colour you want to change (default is Master). Then slide the HUE slider around to find the new colour you want. Use the 'Saturation' slider to mute (tone down/desaturate) or enhance your new colour. Use the 'Lightness' slider to lighten/darken your new colour.
Lather/rinse/repeat for the other colours.

Thank you! Is there any way to change all of the frames to my selected hue/saturation at once? It seems that when I jump back and forth and edit the colors it only changes one frame of it at a time.

There is.... A non-destructive adjustment layer affects all layers underneath it. - That said, create a non-destructive H&S adjustmant layer on the the topmost layer.
