    Question Splitting a shape

    Hi all

This is my first time posting here, so be gentle.

Well, why I'm posting is that I want to split a shape I created. It is a square with rounded corners and it has some effects (shadows, glows...). I want to have three pieces: the top part, middle and bottom parts. How should I split the layer so I get about 800x50 from the bottom, 800x1 from the middle and 800x50 from the bottom? I want to keep the effects.

The easiest way is probably to add an empty layer beneath the shape. (make a backup before you do though) Push Ctrl+E for merging the shape down to this new layer. Then use the rectangular markquee tool for making the selections. Ctrl+J will make the selection you made jump to a new layer on top of the original. Do the 3 selections one by one and youŽll have your 3 individual parts.

As understand main problem is precision. As far i know PS only normal tool for your problem is Slice Tool.
Which are designed to divide some PS object into pieces for web design use.
I don't use it but here is some manual Slice your layout using Photoshop.

From me i can add that after you made slice go for popup menu. There is Edit Slice Options and with that you can control it position/dimension by pixels (can make more accurate). Then maybe you'll need to use divide (or can figure out how to do it with one cut).
And read how to save in given manual. It'll save all slices and all effects will be where they are.

    Have fun.

I'm having a tough time visualizing what you are trying to do, but I'll try to assist. To 'split' it, I assume you are referring to one image that encompasses one layer. If this is the case, just create a selection of the half you want to split, cut or copy it, then paste that half as a new layer.
