    Oval outline... I'm lost

Ok so I'm not exactly a newbie but I feel like this is a newbie question.

I want to make an oval outline for a logo. It needs to be pretty thick. every method I try never looks right.

Ive tried the edit-stroke, stroke under FX, stroking a path with a brush, select-contract and select-expand to delete an oval out of an oval, everything. No matter what method I use the oval ends up looking like it has weird angles and points instead of being a smooth oval.

Why is this so difficult? What am I missing? Is this easier in illustrator or something? I need a SMOOTH oval with the center missing, but it needs to be pretty thick.

Tried it here are my results. Document is 4000x2500 at 600dpi

created shape. rasterized, then selected and contracted to delete center.

    Oval outline... I'm lost-select-contract.png

created shape. rasterized. then went to edit-stroke-200px
    Oval outline... I'm lost-stroke-200px.png
Created shape, left as mask, went to fx-stoke 200px
    Oval outline... I'm lost-fx-stroke.png

See how none of the edges are smooth no matter which way I do it? I actually want it to be even thicker, about 300-400px instead of the 200px shown above.

    Hi ptl5spd

That's a know issue in PS, since PS is a pixel based imaged editing software, there's some methods "work arounds" that you can try, like this.

Also if you want to create a shape whit very clean and crisp edges, i'll recommend using a vector based editing program like Illustrator, and then bring your file to PS for further editing.

    Hope this helps.

That is a freaking awesome tutorial!

Gotta try that tonight. But Sir Max is dead right - the best thing to do is start in Illustrator. All your headaches go away!
