my text tool is not working

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS5. When I click the text tool and type it shows that I typed something in the layer palette but not in and on the project. The only way I can see the text is to free transform the text. How do I fix this problem?

Did it never work properly, or is this a new problem? Is the text large enough to see, are you free transforming to make it larger? Does the text color contrast the background color?

It types the letter but the cursor does not move to reveal the letters. The only way I can get the letters to show is to free transform the cursor.
