hello... need a little help... i recently I've been shooting my landscape photos in RAW and Jpeg... using the jpegs for easy review.. anyways... i want to rename the files after importing them ontl my computer in my file folder system... so, what i want to do is rename the photos , but i wan to rename them so the raw have the same number as the jpeg... ie... pic 001.jpeg and pic 001.raw...

so heres my question.. is there a way to select every other photo (the raws are odd numbers 1,,3,5,7etc and the jepegs are 2,4,6,8 etc.. sp when i do a batch rename i can batch the raw to keep the odd number and the jpegs to keep the even numbers with the new name... ie vacations 7-1-13_location 001.raw... and the same jpeg photo to be renamed to vacations 7-1-13_001.jpeg...

did i explain the clear??

any help is appreciated...

thanks in advance,.... Dave..

OP: "...but i wan to rename them so the raw have the same number as the jpeg... ie... pic 001.jpeg and pic 001.raw..."

I don't understand your (above) statement of the problem.

Every digital camera that I have ever worked with (that can put out both JPG and raw files) always does *exactly* what you want, without having to do any renaming. For example, I have attached below a screen shot from one of my directories that shows the files exactly as they come out of one of my cameras. They are in exactly the organization that you seem to want.

Are you asking because you have you already made changes to the file names and need to get back into the pair-wise organization you described?

If so, probably the easiest way to describe your current situation is to simply post a screen shot of one of your folders that shows several files in your current organization / file naming convention, ie, just like I did.

BTW, are you on a Windows or a Mac?

Tom.. I have not done any renaming thus far.. my files look exactly like you have in your screen shot... However, what i want to do is rename... something like this..

Alaska cruise day 1_001.jpg
Alaska cruise day 1_001.raw
Alaska cruise day 1_002.jpg
Alaska cruise day 1_002.raw
Alaska cruise day 1_003.jpg
Alaska cruise day 1_003.raw

Alaska cruise day 2_001.jpg
Alaska cruise day 2_001.raw
Alaska cruise day 2_002.jpg
Alaska cruise day 2_002.raw
Alaska cruise day 2_003.jpg
Alaska cruise day 2_003.raw

and so on... with each folder having its each unique name...IE... Alaska cruise, Caribbean cruise, baseball game, and so on...

Thanks for the help...Dave

In other words, the first thing you want is for the extension to be changed from *.nef or *.cr2 (or whatever) to *.raw? Is that right?

Tom

The way I read it he wants to rename image_7480.cr2 and image_7480.jpg to Photoname_1.cr2 and Photoname_1.jpg.
image_7481.cr2 and image_7481.jpg to Photoname_2.cr2 and Photoname_2.jpg
image_7482.cr2 and image_7482.jpg to Photoname_3.cr2 and Photoname_3.jpg
image_7483.cr2 and image_7483.jpg to Photoname_4.cr2 and Photoname_4.jpg
Etc.

Sorting them by type should list the raw files in order followed by the jpg's in order.
Rename the raw files first to last then rename the jpg's the same way.

Not necessarily with a .raw extension... I will probably keep the .cr2 for the raw files.... the MAIN thing i want to accomplish is give my files custom names (for my file system) and keep the raw files with the same number as the jpg's...

I keep the jpgs for easy viewing (for my wife) in windows viewer.. and then i have the raw files for editing...

clear as mud???

thanks again...dave

YES !!!! that is exactly what i am trying to accomplish.... I assume the one thing i have to remember when sorting them as suggested is when i am going thru them BEFORE renaming them and deleting the ones i dont want / like/ need... ihave to remember to delete BOTH files before i rename... Am i assuming correctly???

OK, thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, I always think of too many oddball possibilities. ;-)

There are many ways to do what you want. You can do it:

At the command line using the REN command.
http://www.computerhope.com/renamehl.htm
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490987.aspx

Using Windows file explorer.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320167 (for XP)
http://lifehacker.com/5826412/to-quickly-rename-multiple-files-in-windows-just-hit-tab-or-f2 (for Win 7)

Using Bridge.
http://blogs.adobe.com/educationleaders/2007/09/batch_renaming_photographs_usi.html

Using Lightroom.
http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2011/03/lr-3-renaming-files.html

Using plug-ins for Lightroom.
http://www.robcole.com/Rob/ProductsAndServices/FileRenamerLrPlugin/

Using specialized bulk renaming standalone programs, many of which are free. Personally, I would recommend this approach. eg,
http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php (one that I use)
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-rename-utility.htm (big list)

However, no matter which method you use, I have a few suggestions.

1) First, and most importantly, before you do anything, make a backup of all the files that you intend to rename, and then put these backup files in a completely different, essentially untouchable, safe location. This way, if the file renaming process goes bad, it will take you only seconds to get back to where you started. This is critically important because there are so many ways a bulk file renaming operation can go wrong, and you can easily be left with a mess of files with very, very odd file names that are nearly impossible restore to their original names unless you do it manually.

One of the major reasons for mentioning methods (ie, Bridge, LR, LR-plugins, utility programs) that show you exactly what the new names will be before the changes are actually made is to avoid the problem mentioned in the previous paragraph.

2) My second suggestion is to leave the original file name and number at the start of the new file name and number. Then append whatever new information you want after the original file name.

There are many reasons for this, for example, this way you are essentially ensured of having a unique identifier in every filename, and that ID number is always in the same position. This makes it easy to find related versions of the same file.

3) I reserved my third suggestion for last because it does not, strictly speaking, answer your question. Instead, I would suggest a completely different approach. My third suggestion is that before you embark on any mass renaming project, you should get & read through a copy of a book called," The DAM Book":
http://thedambook.com/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0596523572

The reason is that you are reinventing the wheel. Many, many people before you have faced the exact same problem you are facing. The conclusion of many, if not most of these people is that systems like the one you are considering may work for relatively small numbers of files, but once you get into the thousands of files, systems like yours almost always become unwieldy, prone to naming conflicts, difficult to remember exactly how you named something, etc.. For example, will you remember if you named the nice photo of your wife on vacation a couple of years ago under "vacations", "portraits", "family", "Grand Canyon", or something else.

Much better methods exist, and it's vastly preferable for you to seriously consider these approaches before you embark on such a project, rather than being forced to change your archive system after you have several thousand images in your photo archive and need to rename all of them, add keywords, etc.

HTH,

TJM

PS - FWIW, I use the methods suggested in the DAM book. I have well over 250,000 images in my photo archive and can usually find any individual one of them in a matter of seconds, and all the variants of it (eg, other sizes, B&W, etc.) in another few seconds.

Yes you can delete before the rename although I have no problem with gaps in my file list (delete after rename).
Just my 2¢ but there are viewers that can view raw files.
Shooting raw and Jpg slows down your camera, fills up your memory card quicker, and complicates your numbering systems.

You may want to look into one of those viewers.

Thanks for all the help so far... One more question... AFTER i sort the files by name so the jpgs load in order and the cr2's load in order... HOW do i rename the .cr2 files as cr2 files... another words i want to keep them as cr2 (RAW) files so i can keep the lightroom editing abilities.... If i were to just put .cr2 in the last box before renaming... will they keep their cr2 properties

thanks again... Dave
