Need some tips and guide...

Photoshopgurus Photoshop Tutorials - Face Makeover

hi i need some explanation about "Step 1 - Smoothing Skin tone & Texture" from this link.. i don't understand how it was done... can anyone help and give some step by step guide? thanks!

It says duplicate the photo layer. [Select that layer with a click on it and press Ctrl+j]
Then goto menu "Filter->Noise->Median" and choose the apropriate setting

hey, thanks for the reply.. i understood that part.. the part after that until the end is what's confusing me. i know that median helps in smoothing the skin, but, how does it help in changing the dull complexion?
