Again an experiment in PS 3D.

I made a wooden row-boat. I must say its doesn't look very natural but that is, in my eyes, the case for most common 3D art.

Well I made the boat

and I had to make use of it so I tried this

Absolutely not perfect but I had fun making it (I think...)

Thanks.

In the first picture I added just some positions and disabled the shadows.

OK, I added a lot of screenprints, I'm not so good in words:

- New file 3000 x 3000 px color it 50 % (transparent background hurts the eyes)
- set the guidelines for a view from above (the double are for the thickness of the wooden hull) Make sure the whole surface has guidelines.

001.jpg

- with the pen tool draw the contour of 'half' the boat.
- make a selection
- press CTRL+J to place the selection on his own layer

002.jpg

003.jpg

- Go to 3D/new 3D extrusion from selected layer
- In th 3D menu click on the 'deform' button (1)
- Set the horizontal angle on -180° (2)
- Pull the extrusion depht slider to the left until about on the right guide line and work with the up/down arrow to make it fit with the guide line (do not try only with the slider, it will drive you nuts) (3)

For the change of material select ALL layers (you can change it afterwards)

In the materials tab go to diffuse/replace texture
Choose your texture (make sure the planks stand verticaly)

This is what you get

This is for the basic hull shape.

I hope I was any good at explaining the 'how' I did it.

This is fantastic work Eggy. Very good explanation too.

I can only guess about the difficulties you had to master with this job.
As you mentioned, some sliders are absolutely useless, thank you Adobe!, you have to put in values to get close to what you need.

Very nice work Eggy. :)

One small comment I have about the test composition you did of the boat on the stream, if you were planning to do any more with that: I would always, if it's possible, alter the lighting on the 3D model to more accurately fit the lighting in the photo you've chosen as a background. In this case, given the cloudy weather in the picture, it seems like the boat lighting would need to be much more diffused, removing the hard, strong shadows that it currently has.

Thanks for the comments.
Yes, the shadows are a bit hard.
It was an experiment and I grabbed the first background I could find.
I'll have to tune the project and add some details too.
