Illustrator How do you I do ...

Hey all, i'm new to illustrator and I saw this effect and I was wondering what it's called and how do I do it in illustrator? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you for the reply. My pen tool skills unfortunately are less than stellar. I assumed there was more of an assisted way to accomplish this.

Would you happen to know what you call that effect?

For the pen tool challenged. Find a letter "S" that will work. Add a bit stroke, expand and expand again. Throw away the fill section. Use the eraser tool to open the ends.
