Illustrator Help with stroke

I have looked everywhere trying to figure this out and I've gotten no further.

I need to create a second path round the black outline of the lettering. Objects>Path>Outline Stroke doesn't work

Type-Create Outlines then use the appearance panel to add another stroke.

It's not doing anything. I need to create a path on each side of the black line.

I tried to make a second stroke and make it the same width as the first stroke, then align the path to the outside, but as you can see, the align buttons are grayed out.

Ungroup the letters first, then you should have all the stroke options.

How do I ungroup them?! I feel like I'm on the brink of a breakthrough!
