Illustrator using effects on an object

Here's a quick one. What do I have to do to an object to be able to add effects such as texture to it? They are grayed out now.

It depends, you need to provide more information.

Just a basic ellipse done with the ellipse tool. Almost all the effects options are grayed out. When I rasterized it, I got a white background. I wanted a texture on it.

You made a simple ellipse shape and all the effects are grayed out? I don't have an answer other than to say, they shouldn't be or you must be leaving something out of what you're telling me.

Here's my screen shot example. I went back to rasterize and this time clicked on transparency but the textures were still grayed out. (scratching my head) I've gotten around this by importing my own textures and background onto my workspace.
