Why a Drawing and Painting forum?

Why a drawing and painting forum? Good question and the answer is simple; why not?
Learning how to draw and paint is not only useful for artists. Many professionals benefit daily from having these skills:

- animators
- film makers
- architects
- designers (car, fashion, interior designers, etc)
- illustrators
- matte painters
- decorators
- professional photo retouchers
- tattoo artists
- etc.

Photoshop is also a great tool to make digital drawings and paintings as people continue to show on sites like:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=133
http://digitalart.org/
http://www.furiae.com/ (super talented Linda Bergkvist, winner of many awards))
http://www.ans-graphics.com/ (Andy Simmons)
http://www.eyewoo.com/ (Philip Hone Williams, joined PSG years ago after I invited him)
http://www.goodbrush.com/ (Craig Mullens)
http://www.dylancolestudio.com/ (Dylan Cole, one of the most famous matte painters (Daredevil, Lord of the Rings, Superman Returns, etc))

So that?s one of the reasons why I added this forum, the other reason is because with a lot of motivation I picked up pencil drawing again after almost 30 years (mostly human figures and portraits).

So whether the forum will be used a lot or not, only time will tell, but I think a forum like this belongs on any Photoshop forum (or art forum for that matter). :)

I am new to digital art programs and I'm very interested in learning how to create directly from the tools, instead of using traditional media and then scanning it in. Is there are positive to doing the art in traditional media first?

It's all about what you prefer, what you feel most comfortable with. In my case I hate using a table for detailed pencil drawings, I just simply prefer my mechnical pencils instead, it just feels better, more natural, better resolution and I can do it pretty much anywhere I want, any time.

On the other end when it comes to painting I really dislike the smell of paint, the mess, the cleaning, the space you need, creating tons of images that you have no room for, more difficult to correct mistakes, etc, and it that case I prefer a tablet and all the tools in Photoshop (or Painter) that make painting easier.
