Help with image effect

Can someone tell me how to reproduce this effect

This is an old one done along time ago by MrTom and now i need to change one but forgot how.

At first guess I would say that the figure is isolated on a layer of its own. Then image/adjustments/threshold applied. Following that the figure would then be colourised. Then the whole lot is placed on a background with a gradient applied to it.

This is only one of many ways you could get close to the same effect.

Using the method I suggested I did this in about 2 - 3 minutes.

Not identical - but a play with the settings would get you close.

I agree with @fredfish, the character on his own layer, posterize level 2, desaturate, inverse, put a gradient layer on top and see what blend mode fits the best.
