Using adjustment layers with masks

Hi all,
I think I'm missing something obvious here but here's my problem:
Lets say I have an area of a picture to which I want to apply a adjustment layer such as Hue/Saturation.
I select the area and create a mask.
I then apply a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
The problem is that the adjustment layer affects the whole image rather than the masked area.
What am I doing wrong?

Is your mask attached to the hue/saturation layer? Should look like this:

The mask reveals the adjustment to a specific area, but the same area on all layers below it. If you want to restrict the adjustment mask to only one layer use the clipping function.

Ah! That's the problem. The mask was not attached to the Adjustment layer and now I know why.

Steps were.
1. Make selection and refine edge
2. Create mask
3. Apply adjustment layer

Step 2 was my mistake. I should have left that out and just gone to step 3.
Sorry, I'm a complete dunderhead.
Thanks for your guidance
