I would create the shape using the pen tool and then stroke it with an orange brush. Then add and outer glow, rasterisze it and then use the smudge tool to create flames, and then finish it off by adding smoke by using an overlay.

Bare in mind that you will need to use a little of all the techniques to come up with what works for you. Also, yo will have to improvise on the smoke since most of these tuts don't cover that.

I haven't looked into tutorials you guys posted but I would use liquefy filter.just sayin
