Extracting color samples

Hello,
I am new at this so thanks for helping me out. I am making a fiber art portrait from a photograph. I need to duplicate the colors in the photo with fabric. I know in Corel you can select the eyedropper, click on the image, and produce a sample of the color to then print out and take to the fabric store to match. I have spent the evening trying to do this in Photoshop. I have used the eyedropper, used the 3x3 pixel, get the circle with the color, but cannot figure out how to drop them somewhere to then print out to take to the fabric store. Is is possible to do that? Any other suggestions if not? It's a total of about 6 colors as I have applied the Posterize feature. Thank you.

The straightforward answer to your question is that in Photoshop, once you have sampled the color using the eyedropper tool, it is only stored "in memory". For that information to be useful, you now have to do something with it. For example, you can use a (Photoshop) brush and paint a swatch with that color, or you can make a little rectangular selection and and then fill the selection area with that color.

That being said, you might be interested in an on-line service (ie, a website - has nothing to do with Photoshop) that tells you the name/number of the closest yarn to a particular color:
http://cstitch.sourceforge.net/ (general intro)
http://cstitch.sourceforge.net/doc.shtml#colorSelectionMode (details on their color selection mode)

For more details than you probably want to know about selecting appropriate yarns, take a look at this old thread:

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,

Just expounding on Tom's suggestion. Thanks Tom!

You could open a document 8.5 x 11 or smaller.

Sample you color which is then saved as your foreground color.
Use your Rectangular Marquee Tool to create a defined area for your swatch...

Fill the selection with the sampled color...

You could also use the Type Tool to add information to your swatch.

Add several swatches.....

Save then print.

Don't know if that helps or not, good luck.
