Hey dears,

I was wondering if anyone knows how to create twisted images like the ones below. I'm a beginner in photoshop, so if you know any tutorials or have an explanation, please let me know . Thank you!

This is quite easy.

1. Create a circular marquee wherever you want the effect to start....use guides to position the centre.

2. Right click inside the marquee and use 'Layer via Copy...'

3. Use transform to rotate the layer by an amount you like.

4. You now have a choice....either merge that layer down and repeat the process with a larger circle or repeat the process on the original layer, (Or better still a copy of it), with a larger circle, and rotate it twice as far.

5. Repeat this until you start going to sleep.

Not difficult to do, just concentric circles rotated about a fixed point.

That is a cool effect.

I cheated a little. After the first circle was done, I CTL-clicked the thumbnail to get a selection, then hit Select>Modify>Contract so it was easy to get a centered selection on each smaller circle.

Then I just copy/pasted to a new layer. Ad Infinitum.

It is, honest, but if you do run into trouble just come back and ask.

Hi,

It's me again. My images turned out perfectly twisted thanks to your description  I wonder if you could also tell me how to create the effect below. It is twisted as well, I believe also using the elliptical marquee tool but in a different way … Thanks a lot!

This is very easy!

Just use the Liquify Filter with the 'Twirl clockwise tool'. Set your brushes density to 100.

After..

You can throw in some 'Bloat Tool' in this area.......
Screen Shot 2016-11-22 at 12.56.34 PM.png

....to mimic the original.
Screen Shot 2016-11-22 at 12.55.38 PM.png

Flip the image around if you want the twist going the other way.

Thank you so much for your help! I have another question … I'm struggling to make a diagonal selection with the rectangular marquee tool. Well that's at least what I believe I need to create the effect in the image below. It's from this video clip (https://vimeo.com/album/4296413/video/83542403) where they used a lot of similar effects to cut up images. Am I on the right track with the rectangular marquee tool? Or would you suggest me to use a different tool? Also they do something with an overlay of a typeface, which looks really cool. Thank you! I really appreciate your help

One way to create a diagonal selection is to create your vertical selection with the rectangular marquee tool and then go the the "Select" menu and go down to "Transform Selection". once you have done this move the cursor just outside of one of the corners and the cursor should change into what looks like a bent arrow. You can now rotate the selection to the angle that you want. If you hold down the shift key while you rotate the selection you will ensure that the rotation is constrained to 15 degree increments.

Here's one technique I would use for making vertical selections.

I would place my spaced guidelines for accuracy.
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 7.52.46 AM.png

With the original image layer selected, I would make my selection with the Rectangular Marquis Tool.
Then copy the selection to it's own layer using Cmd/Cntrl + J.
Screen Shot 2016-12-10 at 8.23.40 AM.png

Once I had all the individual panels copied to their own layers,
I would use the Move Tool to move them (individually) up or down.
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 8.06.24 AM.png

Once this was done, I would select the uppermost layer and make a Stamp Visible layer.....Shift + Opt/Alt + Cmd/Cntrl + E

Then I would make a selection with the Rectangular Marquis Tool (don't use the Crop Tool) to crop out the edges.
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 8.06.58 AM.png
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 8.08.23 AM.png

It's not necessary, but I would then move the final cropped image to a new document and trim the transparent pixels.

Then I would use the Type Tool to create the text color doesn't matter.
Position the text higher that you want it to be.
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 8.16.51 AM.png

Turn off the type/text layer.
Select the original layer image layer
Mouseover the type/text layers thumbnail and click.
This will make a selection of the text.
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 8.17.28 AM.png

Then hit Cmd/Cntrl + J to copy the text selection to it's own layer.
Here it is with the BG turned off.
Screen Shot 2016-12-09 at 8.17.45 AM.png

The use the Move Tool to move the text where you want it.

I will work on another for the angled panels if the OP desires.

Hi,

accidentally I did something in Photoshop using the single column marquee tool and I don't know how to recreate the effect. Do you know how I did it? Thanks!single column marquee tool.jpg

Thanks.

On to the next.
Always duplicate your image if you haven't.

Take your Rectangular Marquis Tool and make a very thin selection.
Screen Shot 2016-12-16 at 7.50.52 AM.png

Hit Cmd/Cntrl + T to enter the free transform mode.
Zoom in so you can see the transform handles.
Screen Shot 2016-12-16 at 7.51.26 AM.png

Grab the lower handle, click and drag.
Screen Shot 2016-12-16 at 7.52.07 AM.png

Hit enter of the checkmark to accept the state change.
Hit Cmd/Cntrl + D to deselect.
Screen Shot 2016-12-16 at 7.53.05 AM.png

You can also make your selection with the Rectangular Marquis Tool and copy it to it's own layer (Cmd/Cntrl + J), then stretch the copy.
This allows you preserve the original or use another photo's stretched pixels in a different photo.
