Speeding up on windows 7?

I have 2 computers that I use for editing, a laptop and a desktop, both on windows 7 and both pretty slow (around 2.6ghz/4gb ram) but the desktop based on specs should be slightly faster... but it isn't :/ My only guess is because I have a lot more programs installed and so on. But even if I close everything down I still get a lot of lag when running photoshop, especially when images get up to around 1gb.

So are there any tricks to speed it up? Other than reinstalling windows which is always a pain to do...

You don't mention what version of PS you have and what the desktop specs are but 4GB of RAM is not nearly enough for working on large images. You have to remember that Windows itself will be using about 2GB of RAM without any apps opened so that only leaves 2GB for PS
My advice would be to install more RAM and more the better, you can check here to see how much RAM your system can take

If you have a 32bit version of Windows you wont be able to install more RAM as a 32bit OS can only see a max of 4GB, you'll need a 64bit version of the OS and 64bit version of PS
Another thing you need to consider is the available free disk space on the C Drive and the Scratch Disk space available to PS

Oh sorry, yeah I'm using 64bit, win 7 pro on the laptop and win 7 ultimate on the desktop. And photoshop CC.

I know my specs are pretty minimum, but I don't want to upgrade right now. Am more looking to get the most out of what I have, and as the laptop which is almost the exact same specs but somehow much faster I figure I should at least be able to get the desktop up to the same speed, if not better. And maybe also tweak up the laptop a bit.

I was thinking of things like running a dedicated OS and stripping it down to the minimum. Or maybe there is some kind of software out there, or some certain windows/photoshop settings that can send as much RAM as possible to photoshop. I've been googling away but can;t seem to find much information on it surprisingly enough. Just a few things about adobe settings.

You have the option of formatting the hard drive and re-installing Windows from scratch, you also need to download and install all the drivers for the PC.
That been said there's no guarantee that that will resolve your issues working with large files although it should improve things, PS is seriously RAM hungry and 8GB is the bear minimum I would recommend

Yes there are some ways. Keep your desktop and ram clear. If PC or Laptop is producing heat then use fan, it will also be helpful in speeding up. Otherwise format the hard drive , this is also a good opt.
