Ehi there,

I'm developing a Website for a climbing gym and I want reproduce the typical climbing holds rough surface to style some elements. I recently started using photoshop and I wouldn't know where to start.
The effect that I want to reproduce is as follows:

Thanks!

i would start with orange background

following with a layer on top filled with 50 % gray and mode on linear light
with dodge and burn you create the shadows and highlights

then an extra layer on top filled with 50 % gray with filter noise 28 % and put the blending mode on overlay

here is a psd attached

That's excellent colleague.
That's going old school on this project. Nice.

Do you have any suggestions as to how he might attempt that text effect?

I owe you colleague ! Unfortunately I've some problems with Dodge Tool and Burn Tool. I would like to ask you how did you setup and which brush do you use.

I thought that the text effects could be done with a text layer and fill on 0 % , so only the text - effects would be vissible ad play with inner shadow
but that did not work out well

for burn I would use a normal standard round soft brush , in this example maybe size 165 px
for dodge the same brush , maybe a little smaller 125 px
and you can use gaussian blur 30px to smooth things up

and it doesnt have to be perfect right away

here is a little screenmovie example
