Darken background and enhance image foreground

can anyone guide me taking out most of the background from the image and enhance the foreground.

Here is an example of what I am looking for:

I was able to create this picture from the original you gave me.

Here's what I did:
1. Image>Adjustments>Shadow/Highlight and then brought the shadow to 0%, brought the highlights up to 50%, and turned the midtone contrast to +77.
2. Image>Adjustments>Curves and brought that to about Output: 125 Input: 197. But you can recreate this doing many other techniques I'm sure. I just did a pretty simple way of going about this.

If you you find that the image is still too dark, try Image>Adjustments>Brightness/Contrast and bringing the levels up to Brightness: 106, Contrast: +30
