CS5 extract and create inset icons.

Im not sure how best to word this, but here goes.

I'm trying to extract the main features (outlines) from an icon to create an inset style icon like below:

The method i used for the above was the following:
  1. Window>adjustments>black&white>*filter
  2. Filter>killwhite
  3. Apply style
I was wondering if anyone knew of a technique to maximize results?

I also have access to Illustrator if required,

I'm curious if there is a method that is easier/quicker/gives more detailed results, mainly the latter.

Hi Sparky,

From what I can tell from the tiny PNG's you posted, it looks like your getting the results you desire. Three easy steps is hard to beat! Can't comment on the level of detail, just not enough information. Sorry.

Agreed. The results look great - not at all like a newbie. I can't even recreate it in CS3 yet.
