how to make trasparent / kill white areas

Hello!

this may be trivial but I have a stamp image with plain white background and I want to make it transparent. the magic eraser tool does not seem to work as it has many tiny scratches on the red stamp tint. The best I was able to do is with Refine edge but I noticed some opacity of the red area vanished aswell. Would you help me please?

This is an edited watermarked image so I doubt anyone will touch it.

I need to know the method anyway so would you explain how to make this kind of images transparent please? The one below is a FREE image from FreeImages:

I would use a channel selection method.

Duplicate the original.

Go to the channels panel.

Go through the channels until you find the one with the best contrast.
Create a new channel and select it.
Open levels cmd/cntrl + L and adjust until the edges are crisp.
Cmd/cntrl + click the copy to make a selection.

Go back into layers.
Highlight the duplicate and add a layer mask. Or delete.

if it was me i would just use the blend if method create a new empty layer and put it below your image

right click your image in the layer panel and select blending options and move the white slider left as shown here

Thanks Hoogle, I keep forgetting that method even though I use it all the time!
