I have a picture of a list of names on an aircraft, id like to highlight one in particular, Mine. so im looking to darken the whole picture and highlight my name. How can I do this? Do i have to create another layer, darken the whole image, then merge the two, then erase over my name so it becomes lighter as in the original layer. I did try this but I cant get the same photo to open as a new layer.

Any ideas ?

You could do this in many ways but a simple one could be to....

1. Create a new layer above your image.
2. Fill that layer with Black.
3. Change the opacity of that layer to taste.
4. Marquee select the area you want as your 'highlight'.
5. Hit delete.

Regards.

You can also use a layer mask. But that's a bit more involved.

You could zoom in and select the font/highlighted with a bit more precision too, incase you didn't want a simple rectangle - or jaggy edges.
