I would be grateful if anyone could give me some direction as to how to achieve the effects on this image, particularly the rectangles of different shades.

If you want to learn how to create a poster like your attached image, you have to learn to work with the pen tool.
You can either do it in Photoshop or Illustrator.
Watch and learn from these tutorials and create your own first image.
