Hi friends, I am trying to design the back of a DVD cover. Look at the left middle of attached image where there are screenshots of the movie "cropped" in random shapes, with grey borders around these clips. How did she do that? I use a very old version of Photoshop (Photoshop 7). I know... I just can't afford a newer version right now. Is this just a matter of using a grey paintbrush and outline around the image or is there more to it?

Also, please look at Ghostface (the scary mask on the top left). How did she get the white background to "eat into" Ghostface? Did she do that with layer masking?

Thanks for your help.

The Scream ghost villain looks like its robe was painted with a custom brush - nothing more. You would probably have to search for a custom paint/watercolor brush for that effect. Rather than a gray paintbrush, I would suggest using some free paper texture files (or take pictures of your own art paper, and using that to create those borders.

Sorry, I must have missed this thread.

As was pointed out by AM, this is a torn paper effect.

Here are some resources to help you create the effect:

https://www.google.com/#q=Photoshop+torn+paper+effect

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Phtoshop+torn+paper+effect

Or you can use already created torn paper for some of the effect:

I did the following tear very fast (needs work) using a similar technique I found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxbC5HKnT3o

Oh nice... thank you am and Sam. I will try following from that video on You Tube. I hope it works due to me having Photoshop 7 only. I would just take torn paper off Google but I haven't found any that would work so I'll probably create my own from that video.
