Not every image will have a good result using the channels to extract detail or parts of it. Can you upload a sample of what you're working on?

DV8 is exactly right about needing to know when to apply this technique, but should you want to jump right into it, just Google {photoshop tutorial masking with channels} and you will find just under 1,000,000 hits, the first few pages of which look quite relevant.
