Hi, how to create a stroke with no fill and create a gap like in text "who has" so that if the background color is green its visible around the text instead of a black. I want to delete stroke and leave a gap in between. I know how to do it in illustrator but want to do the same effect in photoshop.:) Please suggest all methods.

Same question as Ged.

Like this (I used white as my second stroke color)

All I did was make a layer style stroke in the same color as the BG.
Then I copied the layer.
Turned the copied layer into a smart object.
Added a new layer style stroke (in white) to the new smart object layer.

Thanks Ged.

Actually, you really don't need to copy the original layer, I do that in my own workflow to preserve it, but it's not even necessary.
I like this method because it's 100% editable.

Similar to where you create an outline around any image or clipart and then it should look like in the image where background is visible.

Sorry, but your not explaining yourself well. Please try to be as precise as you can. We have provided you with the best answer we know of based on your description.

Your images that you posted are of no help at all. Sorry.

How about this?

You have a blue BG layer.....

A smaller Green layer above the BG layer.....

And then a text layer on the top of the other two.....
Screen Shot 2015-09-18 at 10.09.25 PM.png

Now you want to make an area around the text (like a stroke) to allow the blue BG to show through the Green layer?

Ok. Just remember there are many ways to do this.

Also remember, that a stroke will have rounded corners. If you want sharp corners, you will have to convert the text into a shape and use the stroke features in the shape tools menu bar.

But if you want to use a stroke, here's how I did this. You can also use the expand feature. Someone else may have a better idea.

Once you have your layers, we need to create a selection of the stroke so that we can mask the green layer.
Create your stroke using the layers style. Color does not matter.

When done, right click the FX in the text layer to bring up this menu.....

Select 'Create Layer'.
This will separate the stroke from the Layer Style to it's own layer.
Turn off the new 'Text's outer stroke' layer.
Turn off the Text layer as well.
Screen Shot 2015-09-19 at 8.21.57 AM.png

Now highlight the green layer.
Cmd/Cntrl + click the 'Text's outer stroke layer' thumbnail to make a selection from it.

Now add a layer mask to the green layer. If it's backwards, select the mask and just hit Cmd/Cntrl + I to invert the maksk.
Screen Shot 2015-09-19 at 8.22.36 AM.png

Turn your text layer back on.

But I can't leave without asking, why not just make the stroke around the text the same color as the blue layer?

Thank you so much for this method... I am making design for a t-shirt and the color of the shirt will change as per preference of the buyer and also it will save the printing cost for an extra color. I will not use blue color stroke and with this method I can reduce printing cost easily.
