Creating an object

Hello all,

I'm currently trying to have an object (rectangle) under a circle. What I'm trying to do is have the arch of the circle create a shape where it meets the straight line across of the rectangle under it. basically cutting the curve out of the circle along the line of the shape below it.

This video shows what I'm trying to do but you have to slow the video down to the minimum to catch it barely. It's at 00:17

Are you trying to follow that video or was that just an example?

How experienced are you with Photoshop?

I would suggest following some tutorials on using the shapes tool in photoshop.

You need to be looking at the way different shapes can be added or subtracted from existing shapes - you would use the menu as shown here.

Additionally you can use the Marquee selection tool on a new layer and the different "add to selection", "subtract from selection" etc. options to create some very complex shapes. Once created as a selection simply stroke the selection if you want it as a pixel based shape. Alternatively once you have created your complex selection (IE still with the marching ants) go to the paths tab and at the bottom select "Make work path from selection". Once the selection is a path you can manipulate the points if you want and you could even go to the Edit menu and select define custom shape to make your complex shape in to a custom shape available to you under the custom shape tool.

Once you start exploring shapes can be really useful!

Thank you John, I'm trying to follow the video exactly as it's the perfect thing I need for the project I'm working on. I'm a newb but been dabbling in photoshop for a while for my own personal designs but I've had an extended gap since I've done anything with any real difficulty at all.

The video doesn't help being so fast and with their copy of the program being in a language I can't read it's not easy to pause and see what settings they're specifically using.
