Can someone explain the G1/3/5/7/9 X lineup?

So I get that the G3X is their superzoom range (Probably an RX10 but not in the same league).
But when do you go for the other models?
For example which is the Sony RX100 equivalent, or the ZV-1 equivalent.
I've often seen the G5X and G7X to be said to be similar segment. I mean it can't be Canon made two models that go head to head with each other, I'm sure there's something that makes the other superior.
Or maybe you have a link that explains the difference in the G?X lineup? Would be very much appreciated.
