Specific Edit car template

Hi I am trying to colour part of a car template.

I used the pen tool as I always do to circle a part I want to change colour.

I the click on make a selection and it highlights the part I want.

But for some reason the whole template becomes highlighted.

It never did this before.

You can see the part in the middle of the template but it has highlighted the part and the whole template.

you can "select" > "inverse"
it could be the setting of the pen tool when you create the path

Paths always inverted wrong way

Scenerio: I use the pen tool to create a simple path. In the paths palette is shows up as a work path. I select the work path, then at the bottom of the path palette click on the "Load path as a selection" - and the selection is made on the image area. When I fill or paint, it floods the area...
