How to create these cool swirly bits

hey,
For a project I need to recreate the "swirly bits" picture below. Anyone have any ideas? The bits I am talking about are on the left image over that human figurine object.

I would say at a glance that looks like a custom brush other option it to load an image or a layer on top of your image and go to Filter > liquify and have a play around then blend it into your image
 
I just copied the one from the left image, by using the pen tool, then laying it on top of the other image and using the warp tool and a little liquefy gave me this.

yes I would agree Belial I was under the assumption the project was to recreate the image but good job on the pen tool that is 1 thing I have never really got to grips with but should learn it I guess I have not got the patience to take my time on selections so never learnt it properly or should I say pin point precission but would like to study up on it for making paths etc
 
I think you could also achieve similar effects using Wave and Swirl filters.
