How to use a shape to make a selection?

Let the picture do the talking. Basically, I want to use an abstract plain shape to make it a crop selection for a subject (in this case, marshmello).

Focus on the region of interest as bounded by the red rectangle. How do I achieve this without doing the toilsome and inefficient way?
 
Hello.

Just create any shape you like on it's own layer and clip it to the photo.

You can also use any shape that's already created! Just place the shape layer below the photo layer and clip the photo layer to the shape layer!

You can make the shape any way you like it...
