Many sites are now switching to the PHP portal system, I am going to list some free ones that are easy to use and very easy to maintain. If you have any questions just Email them to me or post them.

phpWebSite

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/phpwebsite/phpwebsite-0.9.3-4-full.tar.gz?download

phpWebSite provides a complete web site content management solution. All client output is valid XHTML 1.0 and meets the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative requirements. Currently features: announcement posting, form generator, user management with granulated administration, calendar, poll, faq, photoalbum, bulletin board, rss feeds, user-customizable theme support and more.

PowerPortal

http://www.hotscripts.com/jump.php?listing_id=27041&jump_type=1

PowerPortal is an advanced content management system powered by PHP & MySQL. PowerPortal comes preloaded with tons of add-ons including a tagboard, contact forms, poll, forums, private messaging, instant messaging, members list, links section, irc chat, ip banning, site stats, server stats, image gallery, and more. PowerPortal has a robust admin control panel that allows you to control all aspects of your site including theme, polls, advanced user logging and tracking, user management, user submissions, navigation, ip banning, news management, custom user groups, multi-language support, and much more! PowerPortal allows for custom user groups. This means that you can set privileges for each group including what content they can see and what user/admin modules they can access.

e107

This is the system I have used for over 2 years and it is great!

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=63748

e107 is a website system written in php and mySQL. It installs a completely dynamic website on your server allowing you to post/edit news directly from a secure administration backend. Plugins included with the install are chatbox, poll system, headline retrieval and more. e107 is completely themeable and the only limitation is your imagination. 12 themes are included with more to download at the website. PHP 4.1+ is required, the system self installs after asking you a few simple questions and testing your server for compatibility. Code is XHTML Strict compliant, realtime support available in #e107 on freenode.net.

There are many, many more quality portal systems out there depending on what you are looking for. Here is a URL for a whole bunch of them for you to browse. http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Portal_Systems/index.html

Good links there Marine.
I have tried a few of these on my home server to see what they look like. I like phpwebsite and I would like to try e107 but for some reason it won't install properly. Asked a question on the e107 site but no answer so far.

I do like to code my own sites hawever, but I will keep trying these and maby I will find one that works for me.

Anyway thanks for the links.

Nice posting.

I have tried a few myself and the one I found which offered the most for me was Mambo. If you are a Dreamweaver user they offer a really nice set of extensions. You can build your own templates and themes... all you have to do is place the modules where you would like them.

Take a look... any others out there we are missing?

This is a nice CMS and easy to use for the designer and best of all the client/user.

Take care, Hatch

I know what a portal is and I know PHP and I've used to set up a board and to add some fancy extras to a web site, but what is a PHP portal system? A portal to what? And how is it set up, any examples and what are the advantages?
