Just another quick tip for filling an empty layer if you don't want to use the Paint Bucket:

Alt + Backspace / Opt + Del fills the layer with the current Foreground Colour.
Ctrl + Backspace / Cmd + Del fills the layer with the current Background Colour.

Yes - that's right.
Opt (Option) is the Mac's "Alt" and Cmd (Command) is the same as "Ctrl".

But on the other hand - Mac also has a Ctrl-key, but that's different from PC...
