The quick selection tool is an excellent tool introduced in Photoshop CS3 and improved in CS5. With this tool, you can almost achieve the best results. You may have to do a little bit of tweaking using the Edge command within the Photoshop. You cannot become a Photoshop warrior without first learning how to use this tool.
If you look at the new and improved Tool palette, you will realize that it contains Selection Tool. If you will hold the mouse button there, you will see pop up menu. You can choose quick selection tool from this pop up menu.
Thankfully, you can play around with this tool as you can select different brushes with different hardness and brush sizes. Just make sure that you are selecting the right brush size keeping your needs in mind. If you have to extract a large portion, then there is no point in selecting a small sized brush and wasting your time with it. Nevertheless, once you have selected the right brush in Photoshop CS5, you should start painting the part of the image that you want to extract. You will notice that contrast edge will appear around the object.
As with the most other tools, holding down ALT will invert selection when painted. Just make sure that you do not have to do that often. A Photoshop warrior will hardly waste any time correcting the mistakes. The right way is to change brush size at corners to avoid painting the extra area using Photoshop quick selection tool.
