Transferring layers from small file to larger file...

Hi there... I have files from my Phase One IQ4 Camera that sometimes reach sizes of up to 15GB. I have a loaded MacStudio and the psb's still take a very long time to save. I wind up wasting a significant amount of my day waiting for the save to complete. I was wondering if there is any way to make all my corrections to a much smaller version of the image, then transfer those layers to the full size image. That would save me SOOOOO much time.
