I was introduced to Illustrator a couple of months back in a technical aspect on a job I was doing. I've attempted a couple of graphics on my own time, but I haven't achieved anything of success. I guess I need to borrow your manual for awhile! ;)

Good start Nitro. :} The clumsiness will disappear with practice. Using the modifier keys will speed up working with the point controls, but stick to learning the controls first.

Try developing the frog a bit more with another two shades, one darker for the shadows, and a lighter one for highlights.
