Pen tool

Anybody have any idea why this is happening in Illustrator? I start using the pen tool. Sometimes the path I am making stays illuminated with the layer color of a given layer (usually blue), the whole time I'm drawing. When I create a new anchor point, I see my path illuminated (whether it's stroked or not), and the bezier handles sticking out as I make a curved path.

Then, sometimes, I click, see my anchor point illuminated, and a second later, it disappears, and I can't see it. I click again, my path shows for a second, and then is gone.

No idea why.
