How Can I Merge/Blend Photos?? (Making a Crime Drama DVD)

Hiya, everyone im a newbie to photoshop and need some help. I am taking part in a project were i hav to create a DVD cover for a crime drama...it looks pretty rubbish at the moment....

i was also wondering how i could create a magifying glass effect look.....on the front cover.

See if the following tuts help for the magnifying glass effect. The same effect in the CSI DVD cover was pretty amateurish, I would say. All the best to you.
