How to create a blended color effect in a vector image?

Hi all, I have a logo that I need to replicate. We no longer have the psd version of the logo, just a .jpg. I need to create a vector version of this logo, but am not sure how to create the effect of the various colors in the ring. I believe that since it needs to be a vector image, I need to create many many shape layers to get the effect, but thought maybe there is a filter of some sort that I can add, or some other option....haven't been able to find anything so far. I basically want to know if in order to create this effect, the best and possibly only way is to create multiple shape layers, thanks! also, probably easier to look at attached file rather than inline file to get better look at image. The colors in the ring have some swirling/marbled effect....tough to see unless you look at it closely. The colors in the ring aren't hard, mechanical shapes....there is some swirling, randomness to it.....hence my question b/c it seems creating many vector shape layers would be challenging/tedious especially if there was another way to create the effect!

just import into Ai and save as AI file but if you need layers that's going to need to redrawn the resolution would be lousy for selection purposes

Thx - just tried importing into Illustrator and when I increase the size, it gets distorted. I'm recreating the layers and making them vectors in Photoshop....everything is complete minus the cool design in the rings....I'll probably just have to create numerous layers to attempt to get close to the original design.

I suggest when your selecting your layers you create the file as big as you can px wise to get a clean selection of that .but you sound like you know that already ;)

I gave it a go with vector tracing... but the text on the back side of the ring was not clear enough to distinguish... you'll have to redo that part by hand, otherwise I think it looks ok. Will be better with some touch up but this will give you a start.

    Thanks guys for your help!

Gaussian, awesome - greatly appreciated. I'll see if these suffice, and will go from there. I just bookmarked the Vector Magic website!
