Just wondering why the sites spider count as trebled since the upgrade?

Because new upgrade means better tags in search engines which means more bots and spam but over all hopefully more genuine members.

I thought tags came from images or titles posted by members, making searchers click back here from those said tags, creating higher clicks for the site.

No every site has tags embedded in ie photoshop, tutorials etc the more you update the tags and the more you have of them search engines will list the 1s with the most matching tags highest. the tags put on threads etc are mainly for the forum search engine however they can also be picked up by search engines.
