can someone tell me how to create this?

A while ago I made this following a tutorial from Computer Arts magazine.
Last year I threw all these magazines away but now I feel sorry about that because I don't remember how to create this 'Stargate' style text effect.
I remember it where quite a few steps.

Can somebody tell me how to re-create something like this?

I would assume that you´ve made the text by going (top menu) 3D/Repoussé and then used the tools there.

naah i'm going a square radial blur and the text is created with the pen tool
