Fallen at the first hurdle?

Hello everyone, Jean here from Worcestershire in the UK. I was so excited at using my new photo shop and now I can't even open two pictures together? Every time I click the second picture it becomes the background again! I know I am doing something silly but can't get around it. I went on an eight week course but it was so fast and furious (such a lot to cover) I had a job to keep up and this being the first chance I have had to have a go since I have forgotten lots (must be my age) LOL Please can someone help me get started?
